Congrats on making the leap, and happy anniversary. I moved for similar reasons, and ten years later am as happy with the decision as I was in that first year. The more your roots grow in Portugal the better it'll get.

Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I also really appreciate the encouragement. We're settling in well and looking forward to becoming more localized - really stepping it up on the Portuguese front. Sevilla is so close, I hope to visit in the not-too-distant future :)

This has been so helpful! We are from Toronto to but now live in LA. My husband is Romanian by birth and we are planning to move from LA to Lisbon next summer. Because of his EU status we won’t thankfully have to deal with immigration issues but the fears you’ve outlined are constantly on my mind. I’m so glad to hear you also felt the same and did it anyway and love it! What neighborhood did you settle on for shorter and long term housing? How do you find the schooling? We have been looking at international schools. My husband has his own business and will continue working remotely. At some point, I will likely look for a job although not right away as settling in with three kids will take priority.

Hey Naushin, thanks for checking out the post. I'm glad it resonated. :) When we first arrived, we settled in Pena. It was a great starting out point, though now we've moved further east. My son's in public school and doing so well. He's speaking Portuguese and has lots of friends. I shared my thoughts on schooling here: https://soojourner.substack.com/p/on-good-schools?r=2u9u6j. Best of luck with the move and reach out if you have any other questions. x

Do you plan to stay there long-term? I heard Portugal is ending it's Golden Visa program.

Hey Ken, at the moment we're loving it and have no plans to leave any time soon. The Golden Visa program has been discontinued unfortunately, but luckily that wasn't our path to residency. Overall really happy with the decision to move here :) Hope you get the chance to visit if you haven't already.

Happy anniversary! What a courageous decision and a reminder that nothing worthwhile goes without taking a leap of faith. And what a beautiful place to call home now. How are you adjusting being away from old friends and family?

Thanks Olga! One of the best things about living here is that it's a holiday destination most people are excited to visit. We've had so many of our close friends and family visit (even multiple times) within the last year. So it hasn't felt at all like we're super far away/isolated.
